So Corning just announced that they are working on a new type of glass for screens that is almost as scratch-resistant as sapphire displays (like that of the Kyocera Brigadier) and retain the durability of their earlier Gorilla Glass displays.
This was reported first by CNET:
“We told you last year that sapphire was great for scratch performance but didn’t fare well when dropped,” Clappin, president of Corning Glass Technologies. “So, we created a product that offers the same superior damage resistance and drop performance of Gorilla Glass 4 with scratch resistance that approaches sapphire.”
The term “Project Phire” is currently being used to reference this new kind of glass and they plan to get it to phone manufacturers later this year. If we take into account that the latest Gorilla Glass 4 from Corning is still hard to find on devices all around it should be fair to assume that this new glass will take a while to be found on devices as well.
