After releasing, on November 3th, the news about the non-existing spyware in Sony Xperia Z series smartphones, we received today an email from Sony Mobile with the following statement:
“Sony Mobile is committed to providing the highest standards of product quality and customer service for all of our products. We would like to reassure our customers that the MyXperia app, Sony’s security app that helps you to remotely find and lock your Xperia smartphone when it’s been lost or stolen, does not transmit personal user data and poses no security threat.
MyXperia is designed to contain support for both Google Cloud Messaging and Baidu Push Notifications within the same APK to provide maximum flexibility across our global footprint. The Baidu Push Notification framework is a widely used standard for mobile device notifications and used by many app developers. To maximise global coverage, this option was added to the app’s notification framework when the service was extended to our customers in Mainland China this summer. Therefore some older versions of MyXperia include this protocol.
As part of our ongoing routine maintenance updates, newer versions of MyXperia have been designed to select the service relevant only to your country. Any customers who are still concerned can simply apply the update, which will be rolling out soon, should they choose to do so. As we greatly value our customer feedback, we do hope this serves to further ease any residual concerns.”
We hope that this statement ends with all the concern about the possibility of having spyware on your smartphones!
