Sleep Better is a smart alarm clock which gives us information about the quality of our sleeping hours, and is also able to define the best time to wake up. In other words, this app monitors our sleep cycles, retrieving data about the amount of deep and light sleep, and the moments of wakefulness (without it being a replacement to clinical tests). In the end, it processes the data and shows them into a graphic, in such a way that the user has a clear understanding of it.
According to Runtastic, monitoring the sleep is possible thanks to an approach based on recording body movements. By means of a research which involved many users, it was possible to prove that when an individual doesn’t move for nearly 15 minutes, it means he or she is in a state of deep sleep.
The app can be used by anyone. The user has to sign up making use of his or her Gmail account, and then the app will be ready to go. It’s important to mention that the download will not give you access to the app’s full functionality, since the full package is made available only to paying users. However I point out that the free version is very interesting, and provides conclusive information. It’s worth noting that it also works in flight mode.
The Runtastic advises users to have the smartphone connected to a battery charger when using the app in order to prevent the cellphone to turn off during the night owing to low battery charge level, preventing the alarm from going off the next morning. All one has to do to begin using it is to enter the factors which have impact on the evaluation, for instance if the user has taken any caffeine that day; if he or she had exercised or had a stressful day; if he or she had a meal late that night; or if the bed is different from the one used every night, etc. In the end, the evaluation will be done taking into consideration every selected item.
Regarding the memory space the app takes on your smartphone: it’s just a bit more than 35 MB. If one follows the advice abovementioned concerning using the app while having the smartphone connected to a charger, then the battery will last longer, and even though the app makes use of accelerometer it doesn’t consume much battery.
In short, we have before us another great Runtastic app, which the main objective is to promote a better sleep and the sensation of well-being. The only con is the fact that not all functionalities are available for free. However I enjoyed very much using it and I think it’s much simpler to use than Sleep as Android. Try yourselves and tell us what you think.
