Samsung wants to invest $3.6 billion in the manufacture of OLED panels. According to Reuters this new production line would focus on medium and small OLED displays for tablets or smartphones.
Analysts said the new line will initially produce curved panels like those on the Galaxy Note Edge, and eventually help win external customers which are becoming crucial to parent Samsung Electronics’ future earnings growth as sales of its erstwhile cashcow smartphone business decline.
The investment will be between 2015 and 2017 and could help Samsung offset falling revenues resulting from the well documented decline in the company’s handset sales.
Initialy this new production line will be focus on production for Samsung’s own products, like the Galaxy Note Edge. But later perhapes Samsung could begin providing OLED products to rival mobile firms who don’t have their own production capabilities.
