Since the first Gear VR headset was made only for the Galaxy Note 4, the expected was that the new version of the device would be for the upcoming Note 5. Altough, the success of the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge and their new status as flagship phones with great reviews, have changed that.
Even though is called the “Innovator Edition”, it is almost the same as the first version using the technology powering the Oculus Rift, being only slightly smaller to accommodate the smartphone. It will feature the small touchpad found on the right side to control the phone and the gear, and since the phone’s display is already used as the virtual reality screen, it needs another set of buttons to control the device. Therefore, Samsung added a charging port on the bottom of the unit to charge the Gear VR even when in use. Because the headset tends to warm after some time, it was added a small fan somewhere on the left side of the Gear VR. This fans cools the smartphone to avoid the previous heat problem that happened with the Note 4.
The first Gear VR lack of success was probably because the Note 4’s low popularity, and that is expected to change considering the Galaxy S6 acceptance. Also, the 5.7-inch screen of the Note 4 may be too much but the S6 and S6 edge’s 5.1-inch screens are just right while the $199 price also makes it more attractive and affordable.
