‘Project Ara’ brings to us the first modular phone and if you want one, you need to wait a bit. January 2015 is the release date announced at the company’s first developer conference. The exciting news, though, you will be able to configure your own phone using a Moto Maker style tool that will allow you not only to choose the components but add customized colors and designs to them as you do.
Developers will be able to get their hands on the device sooner but it’s yet not known when specifically.
If you don’t know yet, these modules are held together by electropermanent magnets and customization options will include 3D-printed textures (3D Systems is involved on the project).
It may be a while until you can get this modular phone but some believe that this may well be the last phone you buy for as long as five or six years, as you can upgrade individual components as required.
