We live in a technological and busy Era, meaning that we need to be quick when doing our job and acomplishing our goals.
Facebook M is the new feature that is here to make its way through the virtual assistant world, where is currently led by Siri, Cortana and Google Now. The text-based virtual assistance, sure is powerful, you can order food from down the street without opening a browser tab on your phone, but you still have to go there and pick it up.
M is so powerful that she/he will do pretty much everything, except when she doesn’t understand you, the real humans will read what you wrote and actually complete your order. Order food is one thing, but ordering food, paying your order with the money you have established with your credit card on your phone is really something else.
By simply providing your email, M can do plenty of things, such as checking your online purchases and even contacting support center for further info.
I guess this is Jarvis on a real life example.
Considering the user-base of Facebook, how is this going to work for more than 700 million users asking to buy you a pair of socks or some roses for your loved one?
Well, although the team behind the project is a 10-person startup Wit.ai that facebook acquired in January, they say that they are trying to approach AI without restraining any of it’s capabilities.
You have lots of AI’s – like Siri, Google Now, or Cortana – whose scope is quite limited.”
The true goal is to teach M how to acomplish tasks by her own, and progressing from there, and eventually increasing the number of trainers gradually, although it won’t be easy.
By trying to help everyone at the same time, M could be the online “Alfred” for 1.5 billion people, helping us to accomplish our tasks, and making our lives easier. But, imagine this, if 200000 people asking for a complicated task at the same time, that means Facebook would have to create a net of workers around the world with a “pitiful wage” , unlike the workers we see today on the corporates customer service.
Facebook M doesn’t have an opinion on more sensible subjects like the war going on Syria, she will send you straight to a BBC link, even if you ask her about climate change, she replies with a No, i don’t have an opinion on that.
Facebook is trying to focus on what’s important, what a personal assistant would do. Like Siri can’t even order you food and definitely can’t call customer services on your behalf, but she does have an opinion on Steve Jobs, i wonder why…
M is voiceless, she can do more than contacting your customer service, she can give you recommendations of movies, video games, restaurants while relying on Yelp ratings to give you the best recommendation possible.
In the end, M is by far more human than Siri or Cortana, although M doesn’t have a voice, it’s capable to do things done faster and with human-like capablities. When compared to Google Now, in my opinion M takes the trophy home, since Google Now needs a lot of data to give you what you really want to know.
