Samsung has set the tone with Galaxy Note edge curved display and now everyone seems to be crazy with curved displays. Curved displays are very appellative to the eye, and a great technological and manufacter challenge but definetly an expensive production process.
Oppo is a chinese manufacturer and it seems that has develop a way to create a edge-to-edge display, as evident by a new patent record sent to GSMArena by an anomimous tipster. The new technology involves covering a traditional rectangular display module with what the company calls a panel with “special light guide structure”. Now, just to be clear, this does not translate to a bezelless screen, but rather to one with a very slimmed-down side bezels.
The image clarifies this. It appears a special curve at the end of the said transparent overlay diffracts light from the panel in such a way, that it is essentially projected on it, extending beyond the actual display unit. This allows for the bezel of the display module to remain hidden, making it essentially invisible, without having to alter current manufacturing processes.
The date of the patent is December 19 of 2014, so we probably won’t wait for a long time until Oppo take advantage of their patent.
