A new vulnerability in android, called “Stagefright” is giving many users sleepless nights. The hacker can send a crafted MMS message to the victim, and in most cases requires no end-user actions upon message reception to succeed, while using the phone number as the only target information. After the attacker gets the access, he can do anything using the device. From stealing your private photos to your credit card information… Anything. It affects all the android versions from Android 2.2 (froyo). So, if you bought a smartphone recenly, you are a potential victim.
Google released a patch that fixes the issue soon after the vulnerablity was discovered. Samsung also followed suit. But still a huge number of devices are still left unattended. Alcatel One Touch will be the next player to release the fix for it’s IDOL 3 smartphone. The update will initially start in the US on August 10, and users should be able to receive it on their phones around that time.
It’s really amazing that a small company like Alcatel One Touch is pushing the update to it’s phone whereas large players like HTC, Motorola and LG are still in the dark. Will the response of the manufacturer could be a factor for choice of brand in the coming years ? Please share your views in the comments section.
