Who doesn’t remember the feel of a well-played pedestrian bowling, or car tag game with the cops, all this at the sound of some weird radio as Lips 106. That is exactly what GTA III 10th anniversary offers again, but now for any Android (v2.2+) platform.
This game was tested on a Samsung Galaxy SII.
For those o played GTA III on PlayStation 2, computer or Xbox this game seems almost nostalgic. Has everything the original game had, same plot, same quests and same characters.
For those o didn’t played the game, or don’t remember, the game starts with a bank robbery, where this chick betrays you, after that you are on a swat truck being transported to a prison, when all of the sudden the mob comes to save a guy that is in the same truck as you. They blow up the bridge and, as a good fella you are, you offer yourself to drive the other prisoner to his friend and thus “earning” your freedom. You play as Fido, a quiet guys, as in never talks, EVER!!, who by the right amount of cash will do whatever the other guys pay him to do. You keep doing everybody’s errands, earning cash, and connections, trying to rule the streets of liberty city and getting revenge at that crazy chick who betrayed you.
Some really good 3D graphics, very very close to the original game. Also very smooth, no lag or breaks, although occasionally there might be some rendering errors, like missing walls and missing textures. Still we need to take in consideration that this is a smartphone and not a game console.
Sound / Music:
There are several radio stations each one with a different set of music and commercials which you can only ear if you are driving. Every character has its own voice and speech and the environment is well characterized. There are a lot of different speeches from every npc you encounter on the street and also every car does a different sound. But after a while all the sounds start to become boring. But yet again, we are not there to listen to what the street kid with a bat as to say…
The gameplay is just like all the other GTA games, shoot first and shoot later, some reckless driving, and ALOT of mature rated content. Tons of different cars, a lot of quests, and some side quests (police missions arresting or killing bad guys, taxi driving, Ambulance driving saving hurt people…), unlocking weapons and islands. The plot is quite interesting, but even if you are not in to that, there’s a lot to do. You won’t get bored easily.
Like most ports from game consoles, there are more downsides then upsides, especially in a smartphone port. The controls are the greatest downside of this port.
On foot controls: this is the best part of the controls, really smooth, almost like the PlayStation version, we have a touch version of the analogic pad. You have a button to run, to walk, to jump and to enter cars. You can change the camera to top-bottom view or 3rd person view.
Driving controls: here you have 2 steering buttons, one for the left and other for the right. An accelerator button, a break/reverse button and a handbrake button (for drifting), also there’s a horn button and 3 buttons that let you shoot through the several windows of the car (front left and right), and of course the exit car button. everything but the steering are quite good and feel nice, but the steering buttons lack a pressure sensor, which would make the car turn smoother, but in this case you will spend more time trying to keep the car in a straight line then actually focusing the target, every time you press a steering button the car WILL turn and if you are going at a high speed, well… be prepared to meet all the walls and light post in Liberty City. Overall, it’s an ok system, not the worst in the world, unless you are trying to do a quest where you can’t drive off road, hit or scratch the car, if so caution is advised, and remember that “THE #$%& GAME PISSED ME OFF!!” isn’t covered by your warranty.
Shooting Controls: well, this in my humble opinion is just the worst part of the game, when you point the gun it will auto-focus the nearest target and unless you shoot it down it’s going to be hard to pass on to the next one. I find this system quite frustrating because I was able to shoot everyone in the street except for the bad guy with a bat that was running. The Sniper control it’s like most FPS games on android, point shoot score. That being said, bats are the most effective weapon, unless you are against a full fledge drug cartel, with a lot of shotguns and ak47s, or the army :D.
Overall this game is a great game for android, it’s very complete, very addictive and most of all ALOT of fun. Very good game for spending some time. I find it a must have on the Android platform, although some people, especially the ones that played it on other gaming platforms, will find it a bit off because of the controls. But aside from that, it’s a really good game for Android.
