Google Hangouts is very criticized due to some bugs and the slow performance and because of that most people use apps like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Line. According to a rumor, SMS support is being stripped out of Hangouts in order to make the app a better chatting service.
According to these rumors the new messaging service won’t just providing messaging capabilities, it will also feature chatbots. You’ll be able to message these chatbots questions and get results based on web searches. Third-party developers will be able to tap into the service and make their own chatbots.
Facebook’s M virtual assistant sounds similar to Google’s plans. However, Google’s approach sounds to be much more reliant on AI knowledge rather than having actual people answer questions on the other end.
Not only will it potentially get people using a Google messaging service, it’ll also help Google keep its search engine dominance. With other chatbot services in the works or already out to a degree, people will be using other services over Google’s for some tasks.
