If you’re a driver you will probably agree that nowadays it’s a quite of a challenge stay with your eyes on the road. There so many technology around us in our car that we have to be strong and say “no” to the temptations. But sometimes we really need that technology like when we need the GPS. And to put an end to those moments when you have to take your eyes off the road Garmin has a solution – the Garmin HUD!
But if you are thinking that this isn’t a product for you because you have a really old car you’re wrong, this great head-up display device it’s compatible with any type of car. This device not only gives you the right directions to arrive to your destination but also gives you your current speed and the time to arrive.
This is a little black device with the size of a small smartphone but much thicker than that.
It has two distinct parts, the bottom part and the top part. The bottom part it’s flexible and as a sticky pad that it’s very useful so the device doesn’t slip on your dashboard. But if you want to put you Garmin HUD on your dashboard in a more “permanent” way this device comes with a pair of screw holes. You just have to choose one of the options because they are both very safe and secure.
The other part on the top of the device has a multi-function display with a fluorescent color on the screen icons. It’s a green screen that doesn’t have that pixel grid and we can perfectly see all icons with any kind of light.
The perfect way to mount the Garmin HUD on your dashboard t’s right in front of you. This way you don’t have to take your eyes of the road to see what you need on this device because it reflects on your windscreen.
This device also comes with a transparent reflective patch that you can attach if you want to improve contrast.
To find the ideal position of the Garmin HUD on your car you have to make some experiments. But if your dashboard design or the angles of your windscreen are a little bit odd and you can’t find a good position this device also has a flip-up screen to allows the Garmin HUD to work without using your car windscreen.
Visually the Garmin HUD it’s not very elegant in your car. You have two options: your car will be a cable mess or you will have a strange lump on your dashboard. The first option it’s if you don’t have a professional USB power cable installed in your car. The second option it’s with this USB power cable that will eliminate the cable mess issue.
In what concerns to design and fit there’s nothing like a factory-fitted head-up display.
To start using the Garmin HUD you have to syncing with your smartphone or tablet. And you might think why it’s this necessary. Well Garmin HUD doesn’t have navigation or GPS capabilities and for that you have to use your smartphone. You will also need a compatible navigation application: the Navigon App. With this you just have to sync your phone with the Garmin HUD via Bluetooth.
At this point you don’t have to touch the device again. Everything that you need to do you just have to pick up your smartphone and start the Navigon App and choose your destination.
The Garmin HUD shows you visual navigation clues like a lane indicator and estimated time to destination.
If this is the first experience that you have with a head-up display you will enjoy this device, the Garmin HUD will convert you to this idea. However in what concerns to the accuracy of the mapping this device it’s limited to its application the Nav App. So if you are, let’s say a TomTom fan, probably you have to think twice when using the Garmin HUD.
In conclusion this it’s not so bad as a solution if you have troubles in getting know the roads. However like we’ve already said the look of it in your car will be a little bit odd, but it does fits the job very well.
But if you prefer a map with the road instead of arrows in a small monotone screen you will need another device like your smartphone and that doens’t solve the problem that we talked about in the beginning of this review, you will have to take your eyes of the road and sudeenly the distractions and cables mess take over again.
So if you are not that kind of drivers that really likes a factory-fitted head-up display the Garmin HUD it’s a great solution for you!
