Smartphone cameras nowadays are the main reason for someone who is going to buy a new phone. Everyday it passed they become better and better , making your photos look like it was taken with a professional camera.
Qualcomm , the famous company that makes the Snapdragon chipsets available on most flagships, has been hyping about their support for Hybrid Phase Detection Auto Focus , or PDAF and Laser Auto Focus systems.
The PDAF is commonly found in DSLR cameras and it as also made its way to some smartphone sensors too. PDAF basically works by using a standard number of masked pixels on the corners of the sensor, this technology , since its built-in into the image sensor removes the need of additional hardware making more space available for other features.
The distance between the masked pixels means that light enters slightly out of phase and with that it can be used to correct the lens until the pixels are in phase.
On the other hand, Laser Auto Focus technology is very different when compared to PDAF. LAF , fires infrared light out from the extra hardware parts to detect the length of the object you’re pointing and calculates how long does it take to light to return.
The LAF is currently available on the LG G4 , G3 and on the Lenovo VIBE Shot , which focus the object you’re pointing with lightning fast capability but are limited by the range of the laser.
Qualcomm combined these two to create an hybrid system , assuring you that you’ll always have your photo focused on every enviroment.

Traditional smartphones uses contrast focus , where the processor analyzes the full picture to correct focus by going through all the focus points and choosing the best one.
The hybrid system technology isn’t a new thing , LG used on the G3 by mixing laser focus and constrast focus , and the Samsung Galaxy S5 also has a hybrid system , by combining mixed contrast with phase detection methods.
But clearly , the mix that Qualcomm made is clearly a winner , but with great power comes with great responsibilities , such as a higher price.
