One of the largest social media Android apps is Facebook, and is known to consume a lot of data, and while this is acceptable in developed markets, it has diffculted users of the social network in developing markets. To answer to this, Facebook has announced the 2G-friendly Facebook Lite, specially designed to 2G networks and intermittent connectivity areas.
Facebook Lite has been released now in Philippines and India and it’ll be be released in more markets over the next weeks. While the full Facebook app weighs in at a whopping 250MB in size, Facebook Lite is just 430KB in stature thanks to the social network back the experience focusing on four key services:
- Status update
- Push notifications
- News feed
The core of Facebook’s offering are the four services and why many began using the social network before the influx of game requests and apps. The access to your photos, pages and groups are also guaranteed, as the Facebook’s full search feature. Facebook Lite offers a similar use experience to the full Facebook app but loads faster on 2G networks, they have optimised the content on its servers and Facebook have also confirmed that it will support video very soon.
