One of the gains of the Android operating system is its huge customizability, giving us the possibility to organize and change the display of our smartphone to our taste. One of the methods that allows for greater customization of our devices is the installation of launchers. In this follow-up today I a review the CM Launcher.
Developed by Cheetah Mobile Inc the strong points announced by the company for this launcher are speed, security and low memory consumption, being that the average space occupied by the application is 5 MB, which makes it one of the lightest categories.
One of the main features is its simplicity this is easily checked out once the application starts for the first time, not requiring the completion of any registration or answer any questions of use.
This launcher will reorganize all our screens and all of our applications, by grouping them into categories in a series of folders that are located on the second screen of the smartphone. In total there are eleven folders with categories such as games, media, photos, lifestyle, etc. The reorganization of installed applications is quite correct requiring only some changes and, depending on the person, there may be the need to change or create new folders. Within each folder there is a possibility to organize alphabetically or by frequency of use, being possible to move from folder to folder sliding left or right, without the need to get out of the folders for the homescreens. Still inside the folders are displayed at the bottom of the screen, suggestions of applications relating to the same category.
Along with the folders are added seven icons:
- Market-Store applications with shortcut to Google Play;
- Accelerate-cleaning the RAM with just one click;
- All apps-Menu with all applications organized alphabetically;
- Feedback – Space to give our opinion of the launcher;
- Wallpaper-wallpapers from the CM store launcher;
- Shuffle – Randomly changes the wallpaper.
- Definitions-quick Shortcuts for Bluethooth and wi-fi, to access the system settings and the launcher, etc.
In the icon Definitions CM we can find the options to show or hide the status bar of the launcher, the suggestions made in the folders, the icon “More apps”, and we can still choose the search engine, the weather location and temperature units.
In addition to these icons is added a search bar, with the possibility of choosing the search engine and view some recommended applications and the most popular searches.
How to organize and change the homescreens is quite common by pressing on one of the screens until you see a menu with options to change the background of the screen, add widgets, new folders and here we can find again the shortcuts for system definitions and the launcher.
In order to improve the integration and use, this application has five features implemented (some require installation of other applications) present in the CM Tools folder:
- Reminder: Show notifications of certain apps on own icon;
- CM Locker: Lock screen with notifications and some customization;
- Power Saver: Allows optimal smartphone battery;
- Clean Master: Application for cleaning and maintenance of the smartphone’s memory;
- CM Security: Ensures greater protection against virus.
The CM launcher actually resembles more to a theme, because the level of customization is greatly reduced, which depending on your point of view can be an advantage or disadvantage. However all icons, menus and wallpapers are quite appealing, with a simplistic and modern design, featuring a good quality definition.
Normally associated with the launchers come an infinite list of possible customizations-how to change theme, change the icons and their size, change the screen grid, change the different animations and transitions, etc. However all these possibilities often turn out to be complicated and by consuming some time until your smartphone is to your taste.
Customizing the CM Launcher is relatively nonexistent, passing only by normal changes associated with any Android system. The main additional customization features are the CM wallpapers available, changing order of applications in the folders created by the launcher and some widgets provided as a folder with the recently used applications.
These features make this launcher light and fast, but make sure you can’t be a true personalization tool, making it ideal for those who want to deal for the first made with this type of applications and for those who just want to give a new face to your Android without wasting time with menus with many personalization options. For those who want to be able to change to detail their screens this is not the launcher more advised, existing on the market other options with a much higher level of customization.
Performance/ Impact on device performance
When it comes to smartphone performance to run this launcher was not noticed neither any significant improvement on neither the performance of the same nor any additional slowness, unlike what happens with other applications of the same genus that can make the device quite slow. The simplicity of this launcher makes it one of the lightest in RAM, which makes it a good choice for devices with a smaller RAM.
As in performance the same can be said of battery life, not having noticed any significant change in its consumption. However the Power Saver application, integrated into the launcher, can be used to improve the management of the battery through the statistical data provided with information regarding the battery consumption of the various active applications.
The installation of this launcher gives a new look to our smartphones that over time become tiresome, however we must not forget that the level of customization is greatly reduced. This can be a downside for those who like to change every corner of their screens or an asset for those who don’t want to waste time on the customization of your Android. However their simplicity, low consumption of RAM, simple and modern design, ease of use and organization make this an excellent launcher in its category.
