If you are a running or hiking aficionado, this review can be interesting. I come to talk to you about an app long introduced in the mobile applications market, however, only in a recent past it became available for Android users. The app I’m talking is Nike + Running, from the prestigious American sports brand. This app is synchronized with the brands/modality social network (Nike+), which was created in 2010 and to this day has millions of followers. Through here we can follow our friends results, compete with them, control our registries, consult our virtual coach, visualise our activities maps, receive encouragements and visualise at what rhythm and if our objectives are being achieved. In fact, I would like to point out that the app and the support website have a design that stands out from the rest, but not only that, it also offers the app totally free, including options that in the competition are inserted in the Premium versions, this one’s which are paid. The main option is the access to a virtual coach that establishes the workout plan accordingly to the desired objective, e.g. training to be able to run 5Km, 10Km, half marathon (21Km) or even a marathon (42Km). Extremely important, mainly for the less experienced athletes.
To install the app we must enter Google Play Store, search for the Nike+ Running app and download it (for free), then we just have to register through our email account. I remind you that besides connecting with the Nike+ Website, you can also share your registries on Facebook or Twitter. It also gives the option to connect to a heart rate monitor (Polar Wearlink +), thus controlling the heartbeat throughout your activities.
As I said before, the interface has a very appealing and intuitive design, we only encountered one problem, there’s no Portuguese version, which can become a problem for the users who don’t really understand English. In the main menu we can access the options, Website Nike+, “Start a New Run”, and to a secondary menu that will take us to our activities panel (Activity), Friends, Challenges and to our personal Coach. Yet again I highlight the importance of the coach on this totally free application. To start we just have to press the option “Start a New Run”, then, activate the location and if we want music, and consequently a Powersong, this last option is like an asset of the brand; in other words, it will be the song for those hard moments when you need an extra incentive, e.g. that uphill that forces us to decrease performance. If that happens, the Powersong will play and help you overcoming it, this one, obviously is chosen by each user. I would like to stand out the Challenge mode as very important, motivation wise, it can be used to promote time and kilometres challenges, or even of burning calories. Throughout the run we have access to time, calories, distance and time/Km, visually as also in audio, if we choose it that way. To receive the runs information we just have to touch twice in the screen and listen to our coach and each time respectably, until present time. In the end, the results are sent to our profile, but with much more detail, presenting the correlation between Km, altitude, the run map and much more.
This app is very useful for the running athlete who likes to monitor his workouts, this way he can follow up his evolution and even further enhance it. I take this time to stand out that the application doesn’t allow us to monitor other type of sports, however, the brands direction is that one, offering other apps for remainder activities that belong to their offer group, such as Nike+ Training (Fitness) and Nike Football (Soccer).
Performance wise, this app is perfectly normal, running in a very fluid way, and the space it occupies is a little above 40Mb. Regarding battery consumption, here I would point out as less positive point of this app, I noticed that with the audio and GPS turned on my battery total decreased considerably in the short period of time in which I used the app.
This way we can conclude that this is a very complete application, fun and intuitive, with a strong motivational ability for those who use it. It doesn’t have advertisements and it’s totally free, offering every option without making the user to pay, as it happens in the apps of the competitors. The less positive is the lack of a Portuguese translation and the excessive battery consumption. In summary, I would recommend without a doubt the Nike+ Running app, to a casual as to a professional running athlete. The app is at the brands level, being one of the strongest tools in workout monitoring.
